Large village, built on the site of an Iron Age fort. There are views of the Blackwater estuary, with its barges and yachts. The Church of St. John the Baptist contains notable wooden effigies of knights. Set within a country park is the 19th C. Danbury Palace, a former bishop's residence.
The village is at the centre of extensive areas of woodland and heath owned by the National Trust and other preservation organisations. However. the quietude of the surrounding countryside contrasts with the A414, which is the major road which runs through the centre of the village and links it with Maldon to the east and Chelmsford to the west.
