Brown tourism signs

Although it may seem a simple matter to have a sign put up near your business, please remember there are road safety, quality and ‘sign pollution' issues to assess before applications can be approved, as well as an assessment of the facilities offered.

There is an application process, and your application will be judged against a range of eligibility criteria, as well as against road safety and traffic management factors.

In order to strike an appropriate balance between the needs of visitors and the tourism industry, the local environment and Essex County Council's obligation to ensure safe and effective traffic management, we have adopted a policy so that the vetting of applications for the provision of brown tourism signs to attractions and facilities is consistent throughout the county.

If you are a tourism establishment and require brown tourism signs, please download the policy document and application form below.

Please DO NOT send in your completed application form unless you fulfil the criteria relevant to your category. These are listed in the policy document. When sending your application please make sure you provide all relevant evidence and certificates to ensure your application is successful.
