Hotel development study
The Essex Hotel Futures Study was undertaken by Hotel Solutions between September and December 2008 for Essex County Council and East of England Tourism.
The purpose of the study was to make an objective assessment of the potential for the future development of the hotel sector in each part of Essex in terms of both the development, expansion and upgrading of existing hotels and the potential for new hotel development.
The report below has been prepared to provide feedback to the hotels and accommodation businesses that took part in the study. It provides information on:
- The current supply of hotel accommodation in each part of Essex - and recent changes in supply in terms of new hotels, recent extensions and refurbishment, changes in ownership and closures;
- Current hotel performance and markets across the county;
- The prospects for future growth in demand for hotel accommodation;
- The future market potential for the development of the county's hotel sector.

Greater Essex Tourism Strategy
The Greater Essex Tourism Strategy was commissioned in 2007 with the following vision:
"A unified voice for Essex to achieve its potential through maximising opportunities and overcoming barriers."
Tourism in Essex is worth around £2.5bn to the economy, which is set against £4.5bn in the East of England as a whole. This makes Essex a significant contributor to the visitor economy of the wider region and its success - or otherwise - will therefore have a similar impact on the East of England.
With all of the benefits and opportunities that Essex enjoys there is a need for targeted activity over the next five years in order to deliver the full benefit to the Essex economy.
