Essex museums

Essex has a long and rich history from the earliest tantalising clues about life in pre-historic times to the exciting technological and scientific discoveries of the twentieth century; you can explore it in the museums and galleries throughout the county.

Our guide will give you the details of over 45 museums and galleries throughout Essex - from the Thames Estuary to Constable Country, Harlow to Walton-on-the-Naze. Whether you are interested in history, science, art, the environment or are just simply curious, then there is a museum in Essex for you.

Walton Maritime Museum, Braintree Museum, Southchurch Hall, Museum of Power and Great Dunmow Museum. Download the Essex museums guide.

If you are looking for something to do during the school holidays or weekends, or would you like to learn a new skill, explore collections or get messy with a fun creative day, you will find a wide range of exhibitions, events and activities for everyone.

Are you a teacher looking for a new experience for your class? Museums and galleries offer unique opportunities to explore objects and experience history in a fresh, exciting way. Museums will welcome school and group visits, but please contact the museum in advance to arrange a visit.

We have published a guide to Essex museums that can be downloaded here.

The museums in Essex are supported by the Museums In Essex Committee (MIEC) which was established in 1985. Since then it has provided support with projects, training and activities. MIEC also promotes Essex Museums across the region and nationally.

Our mission is to "support museums in Essex to raise standards, and make their collections accessible to everyone"
