Harlow has a wealth of art to offer, from historically significant public art sited around the town to the unique Gibberd Garden, the River Stort Trail and the contemporary offerings from artists at Parndon Mill.

Parndon Mill
Parndon Mill is situated on the northern edge of the New Town on the River Stort. The complex of Grade II listed buildings provides 27 studios for artists and designers, together with a gallery and multi-function project space for arts-related activity.

On Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August 2010, from 10 am to 5 pm, 17 artists at Parndon Mill will be opening their studios and showing a range of artworks. This is a rare opportunity to meet professional artists in their studio environments and to discuss their work.

River Stort Trail
This three-and-a-half-mile waterside trail links Parndon Mill to the Gibberd Garden and features sculpture at each of the four locks. Each sculptural piece has historic reference to its location.

  • Flowing Onwards at Parndon Lock - Angela Godfrey
Carved in Dunhouse sandstone: a millstone grit from Co. Durham, Flowing Onwards was inspired by the engineer, Thomas Yeoman.
  • Mill at Latton Lock - Nicola Burrell
Inspired by the history of Latton Lock: once a busy water mill, Nicola Burrell has captured the water and the movement of mechanical parts to create a sculpture which both symbolises and evokes the heritage of this area.
  • Short Stort Thoughts at Burnt Mill Lock - Graeme Mitcheson
Incorporating objects that relate directly to the canal such as fish, ropes and chains.
  • The Flowing River at Harlow Lock - Anthony Lysycia
The words 'man may come and go but the river goes on forever', taken by the artist as his inspiration for this work, were used by local historian Richard Thomas as he reflected on the role of waterways in our lives and communities.
  • Over the Weir - Alan Freeman
The treads which make up this walkway are based on the shape and the grooves of a millstone, anchoring this contemporary art work to its setting along side the historic Parndon Mill.
  • Over the Weir - Karen Murphy
Karen Murphy has cast each glass element from specific items that were found in the vicinity of the bridge.

Gibberd Garden
The Gibberd Garden was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, master planner of Harlow New Town, in the grounds of his own home. Set on the side of a small valley, with terraces, landscaped vistas, pools and streams, it provides the setting for some 80 sculptures, architectural salvage, large ceramic pots, a gazebo and a moated castle.
