Layer Marney Tower  Layer Marney Tower

A beautiful Tudor building, which although incomplete, was planned to be the sumptuous palace of Henry VIII's Lord Privy Seal - Henry 1st Lord Marney. Magnificent Tudor architecture makes this a good place for teaching outside the classroom. History is the obvious topic covered, but it has interesting aspects of geography, biology, art, art history, design and engineering. Teacher's pack, inside base, picnic and play area.

Tudor Days with professional costumed teaching staff. The class can learn about food, medicine, plants, armour, dancing and games, daily life and religion, as well as a tour of the tower. Technology Days (run in conjunction with members of Essex University) happen in the summer months, where the class will design and make a machine. In the past solar ovens, water mills and egg transport have been made. There are (modest) prizes for the best made, best design and the highest achieving machine.

After two miles you will see, on the right, the entrance to Birch Quarry, and soon after a turning on the left signed to Layer Marney Tower.
