The Essex Festival of the Countryside has become an established part of Essex County Council's tourism campaign which aims to promote the county to visitors and local residents. This year's guide is bigger and better than ever and features more than 200 events ranging from kite festivals to country shows.

For those that enjoy stretching their legs, Essex is a walkers' paradise with public footpaths leading across rolling countryside and beside stunning coastlines while our country parks offer a wonderful setting for a family picnic or a gentle stroll.

The county also boasts a host of fascinating historical sites, from working watermills and windmills to castles and gardens. Families can enjoy events like seeing sheep being shorn at Barleylands Farm in Billericay while rail enthusiasts can take advantage of unlimited train rides and a fascinating display of model railways at the East Anglian Railway Museum near Colchester.
