The legendary Vanbrugh Quartet was a regular fixture for SVAM during the 1990s. Their glittering international career was launched when they won the Yehudi Menuhin London String Quartet Competition in 1988. By then they were already the RTÉ Quartet in Residence at Cork, a position they have held since 1986.

In 2015 the Vanbrugh Quartet established the National String Quartet Foundation as their legacy. The foundation aspires to support string quartets, chamber musicians, and composers of the present and future generations.
