Conductor | David Curtis Soloist | Peter Donohoe (piano)

Haydn Symphony No. 59 in A major ‘Fire Symphony’

Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2

Mozart Symphony No. 25 in G minor

This exciting programme features three works, all of which in their own way are powerful, bright and stormy. The evening opens with one of Haydn’s most ebullient works, his Symphony no 59 in A major ‘Die Feuersymphonie’. As usual the name did not originate with the composer but the moniker certainly describes the symphony’s fiery nature, particularly the spirited first movement and the brief but energetic finale, which features prominent horn fanfare. Horns feature prominently in this evening’s other works, both of which use 4 horns, more common in a full symphony orchestra.

Soloist Peter Donohoe joins us for Shostakovich Piano concerto no2 (which OOTS recorded with Peter last season) and although the outer movements are a tour de force for soloist and orchestra, the second movement is music of extraordinary intimacy and sadness.

Although less well known than his symphony no 40 in the same key, Mozart’s Symphony no25 in G minor brings the evening to a turbulent conclusion. From the driving syncopations of the first movement to the restless ‘agitato’ of the finale this music still stimulates and challenges.
