Contains strong violence, scenes of torture
Celebrated Taxi Driver and Raging Bull director Martin Scorsese returns with one of the most intensely personal works of his career: a breathtaking adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s literary classic.
In the 17th century, young Portugese Jesuit priests Sebastiao Rodrigues and Francisco Garrpe (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) travel to Japan to locate their mentor, Father Cristovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism. On a journey to preach the Gospel and the word of Christ, they come face to face with appalling Christian persecution in an unfamiliar land.
Silence is the last film of Scorsese's religious trilogy of faith-focused epics, started with The Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun.
