Curating Decay

Curating Decay

Beaulieu Drive,
Waltham Abbey,

This special 1-day study day / course, run by Place Services, will look at management of vulnerable heritage sites and reimagine how we might adopt an ethical stance that allows us to collaborate with natural processes and decay, rather than fighting against them.

The course will take place here, at the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey, a site of national significance for the history of explosives in Europe, and a Scheduled Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest, full of unique architecture and sensitivities of the kind that that will be examined in three talks in the morning from expert speakers.

Lunch will be provided, followed by the opportunity to explore the Royal Gunpowder Mills. There will be a guided tour led by expert speaker Wayne Cocroft, and exhibitions which present a detailed understanding of the site’s 300 year history and the science behind gunpowder.

Who should attend? Although covering its subject in depth, this day will be equally interesting and informative to those with a general interest in heritage and its management.
