The RSPB South Essex Wildlife Garden and Visitor Centre are located within Wat Tyler Country Park and are the perfect place to find out more about the RSPB, enjoy a stroll in peaceful surroundings and find out more about gardening for wildlife.

We have received a Visit England Quality Rose Marque as of 9 December 2015. If you would like something guided for a group please contact us well in advance to see what we can arrange. Whilst our RSPB Visitor Centre does not have a cafe or toilet facilities, these are available in the Wat Tyler Country Park at the Wat Tyler Visitor Centre, which also has disabled access and a gift shop.

Opening details

The Wildlife Garden and Visitor Centre is open from 10 am to 4 pm in winter and 10 am to 5 pm in summer. During winter, October 1 till March 31, we are closed on Mondays and Fridays.

By train:
The nearest railway station is Pitsea and is around 1.6km or 1 mile away from the RSPB Wildlife Garden and Visitor Centre. There is a regular taxi service from Pitsea station.

By bus:
The nearest stop is at Pitsea Tesco approx 2km from the Wildlife Garden. The no.5 bus running between Basildon and Pitsea stops here every 15-20 minutes Monday-Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays. Other bus services stop at Pitsea Broadway approximately 2.4 km (1.8 miles) from the Wildlife Garden. Buses from Laindon (no.8), Canvey Island (no.22) and Southend (no.2), run every 15-20 minutes Monday-Saturday and every hour on Sundays.

By road:
If you’re arriving by car or cycle turn off the A13 at the Pitsea junction and follow brown tourist signs for Wat Tyler Country Park. Travel down Pitsea Hall Lane, go straight over the mini-roundabout, the cross the railway crossing. Drive approximately 1.6km (1 mile) into Wat Tyler Country, then park in the car park. Disabled parking is available to the front of the Wat Tyler Centre and The Green Centre, also located within the country park.

Other ways to get to the reserve:
If you're coming from Pitsea station (about 1.6km or 1 mile away), turn left and cross the level crossing. Stay on the same road. The entrance to the country park is 5-10 minutes walk. On the route down into the park you will need to cross over the road, a clearly marked zebra crossing is available. Once inside the country park, continue walking for 10-15 minutes. The Wildlife Garden and Visitor Centre are on the right hand side just before reaching the Wat Tyler Centre and the main car park.
