Emma Abbate & Tippett Quartet

Michael Offord

The Quay,
CO12 3LS

For over a decade and a half, the celebrated Tippett Quartet has delighted critics and audiences alike with its animated, virtuosic performances and its inspired and attractive programming. They have performed at the BBC Proms and numerous festivals throughout the UK and abroad, including tours of Europe, Canada and Mexico. The quartet regularly appears at Kings Place, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Bridgewater Hall and frequently performs on BBC Radio 3. Their broad and diverse repertoire highlights the Tippett Quartet’s unique versatility. They are equally at home with the giants of the classical world as they are with great Hollywood composers. They have recorded for Naxos, EMI Classics, Signum, Classic FM, Guild, Real World, Dutton Epoch and Toccata Classics. Upcoming releases include a Mendelssohn CD for Somm and the complete quartets of Gorecki for Naxos.

This evening they are performing with Emma Abbate the Neopolitan pianist – see earlier ptogramme page for Emma’s biography. Emma has recently released two discs devoted to works by Stephen Dodgson for Toccata Classics: world-première recordings of his cello and piano music with Evva Mizerska, and his piano quintets with the Tippett Quartet. The latter disc was named a Musicweb International Recording Of The Year 2017.

Tonight’s programme starts with the Haydn String Quartet in D minor and is followed by Robert Schumann’s Opus 44 in E flat Major which is one of the first Piano Quintets to combine a string quartet with a piano. This was so successful it became the model for all future Piano Quintets. The Antonín Dvorák Piano Quintet is considered to be one of the masterpieces of its form.
