Queens Head Public House Tolleshunt D'Arcy

About

Situated on the Blackwater estuary and approximately 12 miles from Colchester, Tolleshunt D'Arcy is a village within the District of Maldon that has a rich history.

Tolleshunt - the name of which originates from the Anglo Saxon to mean 'Toll's Spring' - features a village shop, a primary school, The Queen's Head public house, an indian restaurant, St.Nicolas's Church and D'Arcy Hall.

Built in the 16th century, D’Arcy Hall was given to its original owner by William the Conqueror and as the estate changed hands, so did the latter half of the towns name. It became known as D’Arcy in the 15th century and has kept the name ever since. Another unique feature of the town is that one of the only remaining genuine Maypoles in the country stands in the centre of the village and is a listed monument.

The surrounding area also features the Old Hall Marshes, a nature reserve owned by the RSPB, which is a haven for a wide variety of local and migrating wildlife.
