Civic Theatre,
Fairfield Road,

In 1981 a group of 30 women and children left Wales and walked over 100 miles to Greenham Common USAF base in Berkshire. They wanted to present a letter to the commander of the base, protesting against the nuclear cruise missiles it was planned to store there. The women were afraid that the world was forgetting the devastating power of nuclear weapons. Once they arrived at Greenham Common they realised something more substantial than a letter was needed to make their point. They set up a peace camp outside the base. Women came from all over the country, including Chelmsford, to support them. As part of their protest Greenham women crept into the base at night and danced on the silos, they lay down in the road in front of the lorries carrying the nuclear warheads, and they symbolically snipped the wire fence that surrounded the base. Their protest was always peaceful but frequently ended in their being brought to Newbury Magistrates Court. What followed was a series of hearings where the women continued their protest in innovative and moving ways. They argued that what they were doing were symbolic acts of self-defence, protecting themselves, their loved ones and the rest of the world from the use of nuclear weapons. I was one of the lawyers who represented the women. I will talk about what happened in those trials and how those fearless women were thrown into jail, day after day, for refusing to stop their actions.
