Colonel Rich Graham in the cockpit of a Mach 3 SR-71 spy plane.

Main Road,

Come and hear what it was like to fly the SR-71 Blackbird at more than three times the speed of sound during the Cold War.

Retired US Air Force Colonel Rich Graham will be speaking about his experiences flying the spy plane, which was one of the most advanced aircraft ever built. Rich flew the SR-71 from bases in the United States and Japan, as well as from RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk.

Rich is an acknowledged expert on the SR-71 and has written five books about the aircraft. He lives in Texas and gives talks about the SR-71 on both sides of the Atlantic.

A well as being super-fast, the SR-71 could fly at heights of over 70,000 feet and was an important part of NATO's reconnaissance fleet during the Cold War. Equipped with a vast array of cameras and sensors, the SR-71 could ‘see’ hundreds of miles into Russian and Chinese territory, gathering intelligence vital to the US and NATO’s armed forces.

Although Russian and Chinese fighters and missiles tried to shoot down SR-71s flying close to their borders, its speed and height meant it was out of their reach.

Teas, coffees and light refreshments will be on sale and we will have a licensed bar. Our stand will be selling souvenirs and Rich Graham will have a selection of his books to buy which he will be happy to sign. There is limited parking in the Hawkwell Village Hall car park but plenty of on street parking is available nearby.

Tickets are just £8.00 and are on sale at www.avrovulcan.com. Entry for VRT members is free.
