About

Clavering, with the name meaning 'place where clover grows', is a village in north west Essex, mentioned in the Domesday Book. Situated in the Uttlesford District roughly 20 miles from Cambridge, Clavering is close to the towns of Saffron Walden and Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire.

It has two pubs, The Fox & Hounds and The Cricketers, with the latter once being the being the childhood home of celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver. Celebrity farmer Jimmy Doherty grew up in the village too. The village shop/post office is open daily.

The village boasts areas of village green, one being at Upper Hill Green where there is a cricket pitch complete with thatched pavilion. Lower Hill Green is noted for its wildflowers, including bee orchids; similarly, Stickling Green is known for its flora and the rare scarlet malachite beetle which can be found also at Sheepcote Green. There are two designated Conservation Areas, nearly a hundred listed buildings (including the pubs) as well as buildings of noted heritage.

Open playing fields, with a children's adventure playground and bowls & tennis facilities, can be found next to the Village Hall.  Miles of bridleways and footpaths can be accessed including a local nature walk opened in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. There are fishing lakes also available.

Information on the area can be found upon the Village Heritage Boards in the St Mary & St Clement's churchyard, next to the Castle Site, and at Blacksmiths Corner where there is a listening bench.  An old telephone box serves as an Information Box, with free heritage maps and further information available.
