About

Southend Central Museum and Planetarium is home to an exciting selection of internationally significant archaeology, including a permanent display of the incredible Anglo Saxon Prittlewell Princely Burial.

Come see the intriguing new exhibition "Wunderkammer" which celebrates humanity’s timeless desire to collect and view curiosities. From a mummified cat, to a full-length replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, this Cabinet of Curiosity features an eclectic mix of objects from the museum’s collections that are rarely on display to the public.

Alongside some unique Natural History specimens and some beautiful examples of world renowned domestic design through our EKCO radio collection, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We have a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions every year which cover a range of interesting subjects, and a variety of learning and engagement opportunities for small and large groups.

Our Planetarium has a range of fascinating talks focusing on the night sky, all of which are are performed live with a knowledgable facilitator. Advance booking is strongly recommended as these shows are very popular.

We deeply regret that there is currently no disabled access to the top floor of the museum where the planetarium is, however we hope to address this issue in the near future.
