About

Based in Braintree district, Silver End is a model village with work begining in 1926. The village was the idea of Francis Henry Crittall who created Crittall Windows Ltd, a factory which manufactured and supplied components for metal windows. The village was designed to be completely self-sufficient with its own water supply and drainage, shops, schools and churches. A farm was also established which sold produce direct to the village. The factory even generated the village's electricity. It remains a nationally important village of 'modern movement' architecture.

Silver End - which has a library, doctors surgery, takeways, a Co-Op and a village shop - is close to the towns of Witham and Braintree as well as the Grade one listed Cressing Temple Barns.
