Walks and rides around the Dengie Peninsula

Imagine a remote countryside edged on three sides by water - two rivers and the sea - and a great expanse of sky, sea and marshland that is The Dengie Peninsula. It lies east of Chelmsford and reaches all the way to the North Sea. To the south it is bounded by the River Crouch and the River Blackwater to the north.

It was inhabited my man since the iron age when man discovered the rich soil and the mild maritime climate. The Romans built forts and homes and the Saxons gave the area its name. The history of The Dengie was shaped by the surrounding sea, the marshes and rich farmland. The unspoilt Dengie Marshes provide a haven for many species of wildfowl and birds.

Today the Dengie is a thriving rural community that has retained the qualities of life set out by its forebears whilst accommodating modern leisure and industrial facilities. Idyllic hamlets with weather-boarded cottages nestling against historic inns will conjure up images of bygone years. The sleepy images cover up a lively soul with village activity abounding in every corner.
