A cosy interior is perfect for morning coffee and a naughty slice of cake, whereas in summer you can take a seat in the garden and watch the River Blackwater below. Home-cooked dishes have a distinct marine theme - unsurprising considering the proximity of plentiful coastal waters - and the fish and chips have often been declared Mersea Island's best. Starters include whitebait with sea salt, lemon and chunky granary bread, and there's an even split of meaty and seafood mains as well as veggie suggestions, such as caramelised onion and goat's cheese tart. All desserts are from £4.75, while a three-course party menu is from £18.95 per person. I can think of no better outlook, atmosphere or eatery for a celebration.
