The Harwich Festival at Harwich
Festival, Thu 22 Jun - Sun 2 Jul 2017
Making waves will be the major theme for the Harwich Festival 2017 (HF17) with exhibitions flowing out from the Art Quarter (established in 2014) to the very streets of Harwich and beyond.
The 1912 centre (a converted fire station) will house the main Festival open exhibition “20x20”. Anyone can submit an artwork and it can be about any theme. The only restriction is that it must measure 20cm x 20cm.
The Main Exhibition will be complimented by short films, the public arts display ‘Making Waves’, further exhibitions of work by local professional artists at Bodgeners Art Gallery, the Old Bank and an extended exhibition called "Windows on Art" where the Harwich and Dovercourt Photographic Club will present works of art in house windows and shops throughout the town.
HF17 is a combined arts festival and alongside the visual art there is a wide range of music with major classical concerts, jazz, folk, stunning solo artists and the Harwich Music Collective – a celebration of local musicians in a wide range of genres. There will also be an unsigned live music festival. There is strong spoken word strand including ‘a midsummer night’s dream’ in a local beauty spot, poetry and stories from local and visiting authors and publishers and a celebration of ‘Write Away’, a writing project funded by the Arts Council. Dance is also present with Ceilidh style Summer Ball. Performing artists of any kind will also be given the opportunity to perform daily at the Cliff Park Bandstand as part of ‘up to 20’.
With contributors from artists and performers of all ages, amateur and professional alike, Harwich Festival 2017 will be continue to be as accessible as ever before offering something for everybody and something that has never been seen before.
