Wild Camping, In Style!

Landycampers

Day 1

Go off-grid for a couple of days in a Landrover Defender hired from LandyCampers, fully equipped with everything  you need for a wild Essex adventure!  The guys at LandyCampers can advise on planning your trip, what to pack and where you can pitch up for the night.

Choose from a peaceful, pop-up campsite right on the banks of the Stour Estuary, perfect for water sports and paddling where you can explore local walks, the Essex backwaters and marshes, the seaside towns of Frinton and Walton or opt for a picturesque hideaway with spectacular views over the rolling countryside to Essex Wildlife Trust’s Abberton Reservoir

With your home on your back (so to speak!) you can explore Essex, far and wide so why not start at Manningtree, on the Stour Estuary and follow the picturesque coastal road to Harwich, detouring to take in the sleepy village of Wrabness (where you’ll see Grayson Perry’s wild and wacky House for Essex) and then beyond Harwich and down the coast via Copt Hall Marshes or Northey Island (National Trust) to Mersea Island to sample local oysters and maybe try kayaking or the ever-popular Stand up Paddle Boarding (SUP).

Day 2

Day two can be spent meandering further along the coast, taking in Tollesbury where you’ll see historic sail lofts, used by Edwardian society to store their yachts in Winter; Goldhanger with its historic church and Blackwater Estuary views (and where there are a couple of nice options for a pub lunch) and the historic port of Maldon, famous for the lovingly-restored Thames Barges moored up at the Quay.

Drop by Heybridge Basin on the way for afternoon tea at The Lock (Tiptree) Tea rooms, a favourite with the locals.
