St Giles Leper Hospital remains

About

Situated in the heart of Maldon is one of the towns best kept archaeological secrets. The chapel was founded to provide services to those suffering from leprosy and became a general hospital for the poor and infirm. It was connected to Beeleigh Priory and, following the dissolution of the monasteries, served as a farm building for many centuries until work commenced to restore the ruins in the 1920s.

The remains of St Giles represents the only standing Scheduled Ancient Monument in Maldon with most of the existing structure dating to the 12th Century and containing Roman brickwork.

The site includes a grassed area around the ruins, no marked paths and no public facilities.
