The fourth stage of the Essex Way is 12 miles long. The walk starts from Terling and finishes at Coggeshall, by the River Blackwater. Much of this trail is defined by the rivers Brain and Blackwater – a journey between the two waterways that feed Braintree (Brain) and Coggeshall (Blackwater). These waterways are why both towns exist.
The Essex Way stretches 82 miles in total from Epping Station to Harwich Old Lighthouse. Along this fourth section, the Brain offers walkers the opportunity to take an early brunch beside the riverbank. Other places of interest include the churches at Fairstead and Cressing.
Another highlight is the river Blackwater as it enters Coggeshall. There is a wooden seat beside the river and road offering a nice place to sit and rest after the day’s walk and before finding dinner in the town. Look out for perch swimming in the water under the Long Bridge. Worth a paddle in trainers. Please see below for some of the points of interest between Terling and Coggeshall.

- Accessibility of route - Urban parts of trail around the towns and villages of Terling, White Notley, Coggeshall are suitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs. Other parts of the trail are not suitable. The terrain is generally flat but can get very muddy in winter. There are some steps and stiles.

- START/END:– Owl’s Hill, Terling, CM3 2PW
- Fairstead Parish Church – find 13th century wall paintings featuring the biblical stories of Balaam’s Donkey and the Last Supper above the Chancel arch. Church is sometimes closed. Fairstead Hall Rd, Chelmsford CM3 2AU
- Troy’s Hall – look for kestrels over crop fields.
- Pink Lane – touch avenues of oak while walking the deserted bridleway between Cressing Temple and Terling
- River Brain Ford – watch chub and roach dart about the shadows of still water.
- 5) Fambridge Hall – listen for grasshoppers in the undergrowth around the red brick railway bridge.
- Nunn’s Bridge – sit down beside common mallow, dandelions and moon daisies along the wonderful old track into Coggeshall (do a little research and take a detour to Nunn’s Bridge if you get a chance. It’s wonderful).
- Long Bridge – soothe weary feat in the Blackwater at the old Horse River Bridge. There’s a bench for relaxing. The bridge arches, beneath the more recent steel girders, are made from the original bricks that monks of the neighbouring Coggeshall Abbey produced
