Step back in time at the historic Blue Boar Hotel, a charming Grade I listed building with origins dating back to the late 14th century. Behind its elegant Georgian frontage lies the oldest part of the property, featuring beautiful timber-framed architecture overlooking a traditional courtyard.
The hotel was built by the prestigious De Vere family, one of England’s most influential aristocratic dynasties, led for centuries by the Earls of Oxford. The Blue Boar takes its name from the family crest, which featured a blue boar, a reference to the Latin word verres, meaning boar.
Once used as an occasional residence by the De Vere family alongside their principal home at Castle Hedingham, the Blue Boar later became an important stop on the Maldon stagecoach route. During the 1750s, travellers journeying between Southminster and London would rest here as part of their journey.
By the early 19th century, the Blue Boar had established itself as one of Maldon’s principal coaching inns, welcoming visitors and traders to the town. Today, it remains one of Maldon’s most distinctive historic landmarks, offering guests a unique opportunity to experience centuries of Essex heritage in the heart of the town.
