Brightlingsea Harbour has partnered with Brightlingsea Museum offering you a unique and immersive way to explore the rich heritage of this charming coastal town.

The Historic Land & Sea Tour will be guided by one of Brightlingsea Museum’s volunteers who have exceptional knowledge of the waterside and harbour. Taking you on a journey through both land and sea, revealing the fascinating history of Brightlingsea.

On land delve into Brightlingsea’s Cinque Port connections, fascination local and wartime history, before taking the boat to explore the creek. Covering shipbuilding, yachting and associated endeavours. Some of our more “famous” vessels and notable visitors along with the more recent history of the miners strike and Brightlingsea Against Live Exports, and much more.

This tour combines insightful commentary with stunning views, allowing you to discover landmarks and stories that have shaped the area. Whether by foot or aboard a scenic boat ride, the Historic Land and Sea Tour provides a captivating experience not only for history enthusiasts.

So not to miss any commentary headsets will be provided.

Road Directions

By car: From Thorrington Cross take the B1029 to the Harbour Office. Brightlingsea Harbour is 11 miles from Colchester and 12 miles from Clacton on Sea and 15 miles from the A12, Exit 28  

Public Transport Directions

Accessible by Public Transport:

Take the train from the City of Colchester or Clacton to Wivenhoe or Alresford and then catch the Fisrt Group Bus Service 87 to Brightlingsea. 

By bus from the City Colchetser use the First Group Bus Service 87 via Wivenhoe. There is a frequent service and the main drop off point is Victoria Place, Brighgtlingsea High Street. The Harbour office is then a 10 minute walk. 

From Clacton on Sea use Hedingham & Chambers route 6,6A or 6B to Point Clear then walk to the ferry pick up point on Point Clear beach and catch our foot ferry across to Brightlingsea or East Mersea.  Alternatively from Clacton on Sea take bus route 74 to Thorington Cross to pick up the First Group  Bus 87.
