About
Colchester's Roman Wall is the oldest and longest surviving town wall in Britain. It was built to defend Colchester after the Boudican rebellion in AD60 and includes Balkerne Gate, the original main entrance to the town. The Gateway was upgraded to a Triumphal Arch celebrating the conquest of Britannia by the Roman Emperor Claudius. The remains of a Roman Guardroom can be found next to the Balkerne Gate. Sections of the wall can be walked around today and is best seen in Castle Park and at the top of Balkerne Hill near the Hole in the Wall Public House.
