Discover the amazing artefacts salvaged from the mysterious London shipwreck, after hours at Southend Central Museum.
Join us from 6pm at Southend Central Museum on 18 December, as part of our 'museum lates' event series to uncover the secrets salvaged from Southend's most mysterious wreck in 'The London Shipwreck: Her Final Voyage', with curator Jools McCusker Maxwell.
This temporary exhibition focuses on the last voyage that objects from the London shipwreck undertook before reaching Southend Museum: their conservation and preservation. New conservation and scientific analyses conducted on these objects over the course of several years has revealed fascinating information, and many of the objects in this exhibition have never before been seen by the public. The star of the show is a rare timber gun carriage that would have held one of the cannons on the 17th century warship, one of the very few of its kind still in existence.
This month's curator talk is by archaeology curator Jools McCusker Maxwell. Enjoy a complimentary drink and deep dive into the secrets of the shipwreck and learn how the items, lost in the mud of the estuary for centuries, have been painstakingly conserved and closely studied to reveal new information about the ill fated ship.
