Essex has the dubious honour of being the English county most associated with the witch-persecution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Is this distinction justified? How ‘bad’ were the Essex witch-trials, compared with other English counties? And how does Essex compare in the broader European context? This talk provides a comparative perspective on this aspect of our regional history.
