If you’re looking for a family day out on a budget for kids and grown-ups who love animals, there are some great options across Essex! In Brentwood, Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is a peaceful haven set across 53 acres of countryside, caring for over 100 species of rescued animals - from donkeys and sheep to reptiles and raccoons, each with their own unique personality. Visitors can enjoy a gentle stroll around the grounds meeting the residents, grab a bite in the on-site tearoom, and browse the gift shop and mini garden centre. Entry starts from just £6 per person.
Meanwhile, in Harlow Town Park, Pets’ Corner is a charming little farm perfect for younger children. Entry is free (donations welcome), and the farm is home to a wide range of traditional farm animals such as goats and cows, as well as more exotic residents including snakes, fish, alpacas, and even reindeer! After meeting the animals, families can enjoy a picnic in the nearby Water Garden or let the kids burn off energy in the adventure playground, complete with a zip line and giant climbing net.
Storybook Trails
Did you know that there are not one, not two, but THREE country parks in Essex that allow you to step into the world of your favourite children’s books? These country park trails make for a perfect free family day out in Essex for when you’re looking to explore the great outdoors. At Thorndon Nature Discovery Park, follow the self-led Gruffalo Trail, where hand-crafted wooden sculptures of beloved characters from the classic tale are hidden amongst the trees.
Just a short drive away, Weald Country Park offers another enchanting experience with the Stick Man Trail, inspired by Julia Donaldson’s much-loved book. Kids can follow the trail through the woods, spotting themed play areas along the way. Alternatively, head to Hanningfield Nature Discovery Park and find the charming characters from the classic Wind in the Willows stories, from Badger to Mr. Toad! Entry to the parks is free, with the option to purchase a trail map.
Museums
Looking for something both fun and educational for the family? Essex is home to some fantastic museums that appeal to a range of interests and make for brilliant, budget-friendly days out. In Chelmsford, the Essex Police Museum offers a hands-on experience where kids can explore a Victorian jail cell, take their fingerprints, and even solve a mock crime scene. And in Colchester, the Natural History Museum, housed in the beautiful former All Saints Church, invites families to discover the area's prehistoric past - did you know mammoths and hippos once roamed Essex? Parks & Gardens
Essex is bursting with beautiful parks and gardens that offer more than just green space - they’re packed with family-friendly adventures too.
