About

Arkesden is simply exquisite, one of the prettiest villages in the country. At its centre stands the much loved Axe and Compasses public house. The Christou family have run this quintessential country pub for over 30 years.

After a devastating fire in March 2022 this beautiful pub has now reopened and the attention to detail with the re-build has been second to none. Key aspects such as the pub’s historic chimney being removed and rebuilt brick by brick, and the discovery of the original brick flooring in the bar, old fireplaces and more beautiful oak beams.

The Axe celebrates the country pub feel with comfy and cosy corners, large open fires in the winter and a comfortable terrace area for sunny days.

Join us daily for food at the Axe. We have an incredible selection, ranging from light nibbles to hearty mains made from ingredients from the freshest local suppliers. Our extensive menu celebrates the best of British, and as we have Greek heritage we also offer many mediterranean dishes too. The daily specials menu is forever changing and updating with the seasons.

You can dine wherever you wish, in the restaurant area, bar or on the terrace. We also have a private herb garden area which sits up to six people.

Thankfully customers and friends return again and again to Relax at The Axe.
