Explore the past, present and future of railway in Essex! This September we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway – join us by visiting one of our many wonderful railway attractions across the county, or head on local days out via train this autumn!
Railway Attractions in Essex
Colne Valley Railway
Travel back in time to the 1950s at the Colne Valley Railway, a wonderful heritage railway attraction on the Essex/Suffolk border in Castle Hedingham. Travel along their mile length track in one of their traditionally restored carriages, or hop on board their diesel railcar and see first hand how the driver operates the train. You’ll be fascinated by the incredible detail that has gone into building their Tierney Model Railway! Their 7 ¼ inch railway, running alongside the main line, is a must-do activity, greatly popular with groups and families! If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, enjoy a bite to eat on board the HST Buffet Car, serving hot and cold food and drinks. There’s so much more to discover at Colne Valley Railway, including a games room where the little ones can enjoy railway themed activities.
Epping Ongar Railway
Just a short journey from London and known as the longest heritage railway in Essex, Epping Ongar Railway runs from Ongar to North Weald. Enjoy a peaceful journey through the picturesque countryside on board one of their period coaches - from North Weald catch the heritage rail shuttle to the stunning Epping Forest. If you’re lucky, you may spot some deer and other wildlife! A day out for the whole family that offers a journey back in time where you can experience the nostalgic charm of heritage railway. Epping Ongar Railway often host wonderful events for the family, such as their Santa Specials where you can enjoy a steam train ride with Santa and his helpers.
East Anglian Railway Museum
The East Anglian Railway Museum in Wakes Colne, Colchester, has been operating for over 50 years, combining intriguing history and family fun days out. The site spans 10 acres in which you’ll find their charming Victorian station, goods shed and signal boxes that give you a glimpse into how passengers and freight have been transported through the years. There’s something to interest everyone, with displays of steam and diesel locomotives to vintage carriages and wagons. East Anglian Railway Museum is perfect for families with train-obsessed children, with a themed playground, picnic area, and an old, converted London bus. Don’t forget to grab a delicious bite to eat at the award-winning Platform 2 Café! Their event days take place throughout the year and include Steam and Diesel Days with unlimited rides, and their popular Days out with Thomas.
Museum of Power
In what used to be a former Water Pumping Station in the market town of Maldon, the Museum of Power is home to a wide collection of power related exhibits. Their star attraction is the ‘Lilleshall’ Triple Expansion Steam Pumping Engine, now dubbed ‘Marshall’ and proudly back in action after a hiatus of 50 years. They often host event days throughout the year where entry to the museum is free for visitors to enjoy the displays - pay a small fee to enjoy the Miniature Railway! Their Steam Pump Tea Room offers mouth-watering sweet and savoury treats, and the grounds surrounding the museum are picnic perfect. Why not visit during their upcoming Heritage Weekend, from the 14th – 15th September, or The Tenth Steampunk Extraordinaire event?
Audley End Miniature Railway
Enjoy an enchanting day out with the family at Audley End Miniature Railway! Head on a magical journey on the miniature railway, which will take you deep into the whimsical woods where you’ll spot woodland creatures and more. The train will then return to the picnic field, where kids can let their imaginations run wild and let off some steam on the play area. Your adventure isn’t complete without exploring the Fairy and Elf Walk, or the Nature Corner. The Woodland Café is an idyllic spot for tasty locally sourced, homemade food. Audley End Miniature Railway is open year-round, and often hosts wonderful special events, such as their Summer Festival and Halloween & Christmas Specials!
Days out by Train in Essex
Essex is a treasure trove of coastal charm, countryside escapes, and historic towns - all easily accessible by train. Whether you're craving salty sea air or a stroll through market towns, hopping aboard a Greater Anglia or C2C service opens a world of day-trip possibilities.
Coastal Days Out
C2C’s network travels along the southern edge of Essex, making it a great option for seaside adventures! Relax on the beach with fish and chips from one of the top 10 shops in Southend, or walk along the world’s longest pier for a great view. Families will have endless fun at Adventure Island with thrilling rides and fun games, or encounter a variety of different species at Sealife Adventure. Alternatively, head to Leigh-on-Sea, a charming fishing village with cobbled streets, art galleries, and foodie hotspots. Old Leigh is perfect for a relaxed afternoon of seafood and estuary views. For nature lovers, C2C stations like Benfleet and Shoeburyness connect you to scenic walking routes through marshes and nature reserves.
If you’re travelling with Greater Anglia, head to the coastal towns of Tendring – Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, and Walton-on-the-Naze provide classic Essex coastal charm, making them a great day out. Enjoy a day at Clacton Pier, head for a stroll along Frinton Beach, or search for fossils at The Naze Beach in Walton.
History & Heritage Days Out
Greater Anglia’s routes span across the whole of Essex, connecting busy London to towns, villages and cities that are rich in heritage and culture. Head to Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, and be transported back to when the Romans roamed the streets. Explore the Norman castle, Roman ruins, and be immersed in the vibrant art scene with iconic attractions such as Firstsite and Mercury Theatre.
If you’re looking for a more peaceful escape from the city, take the Greater Anglia train to Manningtree – from here, it’s just a short walk or bus ride to the heart of Dedham. Follow in the footsteps of John Constable and walk the Constable Trail, rent a rowboat and drifting peacefully along the River Stour, or simply explore the stunning historic village.

The Smugglers Shanty Special
Looking for a day out that’s packed with music, maritime charm, and a touch of theatrical flair? Mark your calendar for Saturday 11 October 2025, and climb aboard the Smugglers Train. Departing from Manningtree, this specially decorated train carriage will be alive with the sounds of the sea, thanks to a live sea shanty crew serenading passengers en route to the Harwich Shanty Festival! Just £5 for adults and £3 for children, making it a budget-friendly family outing.
The Halloween Train
This Halloween, skip the haunted house and board something even more thrilling - the Halloween Train from Manningtree to Harwich Town! On Thursday 31 October 2025, the rails come alive with ghosts, giggles, and ghoulish fun. Departing at 4pm, be ready for a journey full of (family-friendly) frights, spooky decorations, and even goodie bags for the kids. Tickets are just £5 for adults and £3 for children over 1 year old.
